When you're trying to make a profit in business, some people have a perception that you're just trying to sell stuff so you can make money to buy extravagant things you don't really need...
Flashy cars, designer clothes, huge houses, expensive jewellery, first class travel, luxury holidays etc.
While there's nothing wrong with those things, many people are trying to make money for completely different reasons. Reasons that are borne more from love than from materialism.
It could be that you want to quit working a day job with long hours so you can free up some time to do more of what you really love?
And what is it you really love to do or would love to do if you had more time and money? Here are just some of the many examples I hear about...
- Spend more quality time with your family
- Give more (time and/or money) to charities close to your heart
- Write a book
- Help your extended family and friends
- Make a good idea into a reality
- Contribute more to society
It helps if you can make additional money to do things like:
- Reduce your stress levels (which is better for your health and improves relationships)
- Pay off any debts you have
- Create financial security for you and your family
- Not have to worry about running out of money in retirement
I could easily make a list of hundreds of reasons you may want to make money that are borne from love as opposed to being materialistic.
Of course, when you work hard, there's nothing wrong with reaping some of the rewards too, for example:
- Travel more, go on more holidays with your family or friends
- Improving your living conditions
- Taking time to explore things you'd love to do. Perhaps learning to play the piano, exploring your spiritual side, taking up a sport, writing, building or creating something etc.
I encourage you to write down what really matters most to you (your core values) and derive from that a list of what you really want. Then you can create financial targets that will help you get it.
Best wishes, Chris.
